Not professional advice
We are not doctors, dermatologists or licensed nail technicians, and nothing on this site is medical or professional advice. If you have a health concern about your skin or nails, please speak to a qualified professional.
Gel polish and product safety
Gel polish, builder gel, primers, top coats and other nail products can cause allergic reactions, including some that develop after repeated use. To lower the risk:
- Always read and follow the instructions and warnings that come with your products
- Keep gel products off your skin and cuticles, and clean up any spills before curing
- Cure every layer fully, for the time your products recommend
- Never use a product that has caused redness, itching, swelling or blistering, and stop if you notice any of these
- Work in a well-ventilated space, and keep acetone and other products away from heat and flames
- Keep nail products away from children and pets
If you react to a product, stop using it and see a doctor or pharmacist.
UV and LED lamps
Gel nails are cured under UV or LED lamps. If you’re concerned about UV exposure on your hands, you can apply sunscreen or wear fingerless gloves while curing, and use only the curing time your products need. The American Academy of Dermatology has tips for healthier gel manicures.
Your results
